The four holiday properties which comprise "Mel House Cottages" are the result of the sympathetic conversion of a former "run" of stables - now "Mallard" and "Swift" - and a barn originally built for storing threshed grain - now two apartments, "Granary" being above "Owl".

We've retained original features where attractive and practical - 150 year old beams and purlins and some stone crannies - whilst ensuring that no "modern comfort" is missing. Naturally our intention is to provide you, our Guests, with a "home from home" where you will be able to enjoy a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable holiday in our lovely village in the North York Moors National Park.

Each of our holiday properties benefits from full central heating - supplied to thermostatically-controlled radiators by a "state of the art" 100kW Austrian wood pellet boiler - along with double-glazing. Both Mallard and Swift also have log-burning stoves with a 6kW output. Take a spring, autumn, or winter break here - we close only after the week of New Year until the last weekend in January - and you"re sure to be cosy and warm.

When the weather permits, relax in our various sitting-out areas, including our enclosed Water Garden with our wildlife pond and our fish pond, or sit at a picnic bench outside the pub next door and watch the sun go down over the village green and its pond. Time it right and you may spot a bat or two trawling for its evening meal above you!

We offer Short Breaks , starting and finishing on any day, as a matter of course during our Winter Season - roughly early November to mid-March each year. During the remainder of the year, our weekly "changeover" date is Saturday.

By the way, we don"t participate in any green credentials scheme but where it really matters we"re pretty "green" when it comes to "climate change" concerns. Over the last few years we"ve installed a solar thermal system for our heated indoor swimming pool and a 10kW photovoltaic system in addition to the wood pellet boiler, referred to above, which supplies hot water and heating for all of our holiday accommodation as well as our Leisure Suite.
